I know this story isn’t about football, but it’s still pretty cool and sort of related.
I was on my flight home Saturday from Edmonton when the West Jet flight attendant made a special announcement. She told us that a man in the front row was to meet his girlfriend at the Regina airport and he planned on asking her to marry him. The attendant then told us that the passengers departing in Regina would all be involved in a flash mob proposal.
Jeff Vanwoerden, who hails from Chilliwack, had a pile of roses with him. Each departing passenger was asked to take a rose and present it to his girlfriend in the arrivals lobby. So we grabbed one rose each and gathered at the hall before being led down the escalator and the stairs by members of Vanwoedern’s family.
At the bottom of the stairs was a stunned and surprised Holly Visentine. Jeff is already a graduate of the RCMP academy and Holly is expected to graduate soon.
Holly, obviously perplexed by the offerings from a plane filled with strangers, accepted all of the roses from the passengers. There were so many that she asked a young girl with her to help hold them all. After a bit of a wait, Jeff made his way down the escalator with a single rose in hand.
The two met at the bottom of the stairs and embraced. Jeff then dropped to one knee and proposed to Holly. She said yes. The place erupted in a huge applause while Jeff slipped the engagement ring on her finger.
Holly said later that she eventually figured something was up, but was really surprised by the proposal.
It was a very touching and an incredibly romantic. I was honoured to play a small part in what will be a proposal Holly will never forget and I know that I won’t. It was also pretty cool that Holly was in her Red Serge.
Holly hails from Cranbrook and the couple is scheduled to be posted in Chilliwack when she has completed her assignment at the RCMP academy in Regina.
