If Twitter avatars tell you anything (above), we may already know everything we need to about Swayze Waters.
The 25-year-old former NFL kicker (Pittsburgh, 2011; Oakland, 2010; Detroit 2009) announced on Twitter on June 20 that he was headed to Edmonton to kick for the Eskimos. He’s not on the team’s depth chart for tonight’s game against the B.C. Lions so he won’t be in this game, but his pedigree fits and one of his strengths — long-distance field goals — is something that the Eskimos had struggled with last season.
Although Waters is in Edmonton, a contract may still be being negotiated. Once he is signed, it throws a wrench into the training camps of Derek Schiavone and Grant Shaw. Kavis Reed said on Wednesday that they thought Burke Dales was their guy for punts, but were debating which of the other two kickers to take for field goals.
Friday’s cut-down day has suddenly had a new storyline added to it.
