Ticats release veteran Avon Cobourne

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats released three players on Wednesday, including 32-year-old veteran running back Avon Cobourne.

Cobourne, who spent one season in Hamilton, led the Ticats with 961 rushing yards in 2011. His release was made two days after the club signed 2009 CFL most outstading rookie Martell Mallett. The team also released defensive lineman Luc Mullinder and offensive lineman Simeon Rottier.

“We spoke with Avon following the addition of Martell Mallett to our roster to determine what course of action he would prefer,” Ticats vice-president Bob O’Billovich said in a news release. “After speaking with him again today, we are granting Avon’s request to be released. We would like to thank Avon for his outstanding contributions to our team last season and wish him all the best in the future.”

Cobourne previously spent five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, gaining more than 900 yards three times, including a 1,214-yard season in 2009. He finished in the top four in the CFL in yards from scrimmage from 2008-11.
