Hamilton Tiger-Cats head coach George Cortez continued to fill his coaching staff Friday morning by hiring Jim Daley as special teams co-ordinator, Nelson Martin as defensive backs coach and Ryan Sheahan as running backs coach.
Daley, recently the special teams co-ordinator with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2010, has 16 years CFL coaching experience, and was alongside Cortez in both Ottawa and Calgary.
Martin, who spent part of the Ticats 2011 training camp as a guest coach, was a defensive assistant with the University of Ottawa last year, and has held various coaching positions in both the CIS and CFL. Martin played seven seasons as a defensive back for the B.C. Lions in the 1980s, and was a member of the team that won the 73rd Grey Cup.
Sheahan also spent last season’s training camp as a guest coach in B.C. and was an offensive assistant with Queen University over the last four seasons.
These additions now bring Cortez’s staff, including himself, up to seven, including the hiring of defensive co-ordinator Casey Creehan two weeks ago, and recently retired receiver Jeremaine Copeland as receivers coach last week.
Cortez, who will also handle offensive co-ordinator responsibilities, has said he wants up to eight coaches on his staff.
