I said it last week and I will say it again, I did not see that coming.
I was never one to bet against the Roughriders, including earlier this season, but as the losses piled up I quickly came back down to reality. Now, not only are the Riders winning, but they have beat the best team in the league — the Winnipeg Blue Bombers — two straight weeks.
I figured last week’s win involved a little “magic” at Mosaic. It was Labour Day and the Riders have played very well in the Classic in recent years, plus Ken Miller was back as head coach and I knew that would have some effect on the players. Little did I know just how much of an influence he would have on his team.
So, when making my picks in the Leader-Post fantasy pool prior to Sunday’s game, I went with my head instead of my heart and picked the Bombers to win.
Oops, but hooray!
It’s amazing what a difference a few weeks makes. I think we all knew there was talent on this team, but we were scratching our heads as to what went wrong. You will not see me lay blame on Greg Marshall and Doug Berry though. Football is a team sport and there are players, coaches and management that all factor in.
Do I think that what Marshall and Berry were doing was wrong? Not necessarily, but they didn’t seem to be correcting things that weren’t working. Players should still be able to play well for someone they don’t necessarily get along with so I don’t like that excuse at all, but there is something to be said for listening to those that are out doing the work.
The Riders had been shooting themselves in the foot this season — whether it was dropped passes, penalties or turnovers — and somehow the team has corrected that. Thank God!
I know the Riders still have an uphill battle, but if they continue to play with fire and fewer mistakes, they will have a shot at the post-season.
What are your thoughts on the game and how the team has played in the last few weeks?
